Louet Drumcarders

Louet Drum carders are available in 3 sizes with the option of 2 different cloth types.     Junior is a 4” wide drum, Standard 8” drum and the XL which is 12” wide.  The cloth  options are 46 Classic (46 teeth/sq inch, 5/8" long) and 72 Standard (72 teeth/sq inch, 5/8” long). The teeth are designed to intertwine which eliminates the need for a packing brush as fiber is constantly being packed on the drum by the intertwining teeth.  The Classic cloth is perfect if your needs include carding lots of thick batts fast. It is great to card Art Yarn batts, batts for layers for felt making and color blending can be done with success as well. The Standard cloth is very versatile and best suited for finer fibers.   The carder clamps to a table and comes already permanently adjusted for you.

An instruction manual written by well known author and fiber artist Deb Menz is included with all drumcarders. The Louet Drumcarders are made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louet carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes are enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system. For drumcarders it is common to mention the gear ratio that drives the licker-in when you rotate the large drum. However, what really counts for carding is the ratio of the surface speed of both drums, because the difference of surface speed does the carding. You get this surface speed ratio by multiplying the gear ratio with the ratio of the diameters of the large drum and the licker-in.

Combs, Handcards and Blending Board

Carding and combing are pre-spinning treatments to align the fibers which enables you to spin fibers more easily. For the technique of felting or making woolen blankets, carding is essential. Combing straightens the fibers more than carding. This difference determines the character of the spun thread: worsted or woolen-spun. We make single row and double row mini-combs, both 6.5 cm (2 1/2") wide. These handy tools are a unique device which can be used for de-hairing and fine fiber combing. After combing, the fiber can be pulled into a sliver or spun straight from the comb. These combs are made of ash with a lacquer finish. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louet carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. As a safety precaution, all Louet combs are machined so they are not razor sharp.

Specs:   Tines are enclosed in wood to prevent end tines from breaking (modification in May 2015)  Tines are 4 mm apart and 5.5 cm long.  Tines are set in a plastic fiting that is about 3.5 mm deep.  Tine is centered in this plastic fitting and there is 1/2 mm on either side of the tine.

Blending Board

With our blending board you can blend different types and colours of fibre and make rolags out of it. The board has a keel which can be fixed in three places so you have three different tilting positions. You can easily hold the board on your lap and work with it, because the keel can rotate. The blending board is made of lacquered laminated birch and the carding cloth measures 30 x 30 cm (almost 12′′x 12′′), is 13 mm (1/2′′) high and has 72 tpi. The board comes with a blending brush and three dowels for easy fibre removal
